We are learning about circle theorems in maths. You know all those rules when working out stuff to do with lines, triangles and quadrilaterals in a circle. The segments, sectors, chords and tangents. I remember I was in the car on the way back from getting a takeaway one night and I remember feeling really heavy. I felt like I had so much to do, so little time and so many thoughts whirling around in my head. I remember knowing that I didn’t have that much to do/worry about but mashing all of those things together made me feel as though, as some people say ‘the world is on their shoulders’. It’s weird because in reality all I needed to do was some homework before the weekend, sort out my bags for dance on Saturday and do some blog admin stuff but it felt like so much since it was all muddled in my head. It didn’t seem manageable.
I needed to break down things that I needed to do into smaller tasks. To do lists sometimes work for me to do this. I say sometimes because it stresses me out when I see too many tasks on the list to complete and I feel like I’m almost timing myself. Like trying to get it all done asap because of how many other things there are to do. Thing is I like things to be manageable and I like to feel like I know what I’m doing and having a kinda structure helps me with that. So I’ll find myself prioritising in my head first and then making the odd checklist to cut what I need to do into lil sections.
Understanding what you need to divide into sections is key before you actually start. Know what your end goal is and how you’re going to get there. It’s strange because I never thought I’d be using maths as an analogy but think of a circle, that circle is a representation of your stresses/things that need to get done. Now, think of one small step you can take to begin eliminating this problem: eg. a to-do list or prioritising. This is the smallest section, the minor segment of your circle, your first step to completing your task. You still have one major segment and need to divide it further to make it more managebale.
Draw another line, halfway through your circle. This is your diameter, which splits your problem into two more slices. Here you can take a slightly larger step to achieving you goal or overcoming a problem. I know it’s odd to think of all these mathematical terms but think about it, that circle is what you felt was like the world balancing on your shoulders. Now it’s nothing but small segments that you have overcome and completed. The circle has been completely broken down, alike the issue that you were facing in the first place.
